NCWCA’s Annual Exhibition “Fahrenheit 213”

The Northern California Women's Caucus for Art (NCWCA)

Founded in 1972, Women's Caucus for Art is an affiliate society of the College Art Association and founding partner of the Feminist Art Project. Curated by NCWCA’s feminist curatorial collective led by Tanya Augsburg, Ph.D., F213 brings a diverse and inclusive mix of multicultural, intersectional, multigenerational feminist artists and writers from the Bay Area together, who are incensed about the current state-sanctioned cruelty, social injustice, sexism, racism, white supremacy, sex crimes, the relentless undoing of women’s reproductive choice, LBGTIA discrimination, Islamophobia, police brutality, gun violence, environmental assault, and more. In doing so, the exhibition conveyed strong, bold artistic expressions of feminist protest.

As a contributing writer, I was tasked to write a response piece to particular artworks which were displayed next to each other, and published in the exhibition book. Moreover, I worked cooperatively with gallery coordinators, creators in special events and promoting exhibitions organized by the Northern California Women’s Caucus for Art (NCWCA).

Creating and Editing of an Art Magazine

Hercai is my final project prototype for the advanced art history seminar; ART602: Art Magazines, Art Criticism, Art Worlds taught by SFSU Associate Professor Gwen Allen who is the author of Artists' Magazines: An Alternative Space for Art (MIT Press, 2011) and writes for publications including Artforum, Bookforum, Art Papers, Art Journal, and East of Bourne.

In order to complete the seminar, we were each asked to create our own art magazine and a mock-up for its design and layout in order to put into practice what we have learned in this seminar. The assignment includes writing a critical review, in which we should discuss a local exhibition/art event and give an overview of the show, situate it historically and theoretically, and critically evaluate it.

The objectives for this seminar were to explore the role of criticism and magazines in the art world in consideration with history looking back to the beginnings of criticism with the emergence of the public sphere in 18th century Europe as well as to think critically about the role of magazines and art criticism in the contemporary art world, within the context of digital media and globalization.

“A Classroom Full of Differences”; A Field Project

RUSIHAK (Human Rights in Mental Health Association)

A Classroom Full of Differences is a two-year-long project that jointly funded by the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR) and Open Society Foundation aims at creating a right-based inclusive education model and contributing to the inclusion of children with intellectual disabilities in education.

As an administrative assistant, my responsibilities included but not limited to;

Creation and update of the workflow.
Monitoring of the project process and addressing of potential issues.
Tracking expenses and predicting future costs.
Preparing and providing documentation to internal team and key stakeholders.

Translation of English documents into Turkish and vice versa.
Organization of meetings with the related parties.

PERSON’s Communication Campaign in Turkey

RUSIHAK (Human Rights in Mental Health Association)

Co-funded by EU, PERSON is a partnership program committed to reforming law and policy on legal capacity in ways to elevate the voice and choice of people with disabilities and to ensure domestic implementation of the UN CRPD. One of the objectives of this project is to carry out a communication campaign based in Turkey that advocates and monitors reforms affecting persons with psycho-social and intellectual disabilities.

As a content writer and editor of this communication campaign, my responsibilities included;

the building of the editorial calendar for the blog we launched on the first day of the campaign.
the finding and telling inspiring human stories.
the production of photos, narratives, and stories.

the development of easy-to-read content for each posts.
the production of three animations on Article 12, one of which was screened at AAFF.
the archival of visual materials, communication outcomes in addition to project materials.

“Freedom of Information” Project

Istanbul Bilgi University

Along with China and Iran, Turkey is one of the leading jailers of journalists, and in the last years, this has created serious concerns about the country’s democracy. The project to be evolved into a condensed communication campaign on International Right to Know Day (28 September 2015) mainly aims at attracting the public attention into Freedom of Information (FOI) and promoting the use of the right to know in Turkey.

As a content writer and Jr. editor, I was responsible for;

the launching of the project blog
creating and managing the content for the blog
the supervising layout of images, graphics, and videos in the blog
pitching ideas and taking part in the production of three animations produced for the project
collaborating with the project assistant in organizing, and executing the final conference.
assisting to project coordinator in the preparation of the project documents such as the final report.
